Welcome to Keep Cars Cool. This is the movement you have been waiting for! Today, in 2024, there is an entirely constructed and unnecessary economy of over-regulation, cars that are over-engineered, and customers who are over-charged. We do not need 90%+ of electronics mandated at the entry-level and nor do we want them. Keep Cars Cool wants to let people choose to have a simplistic and affordable way to get from A to B. We propose a seismic deregulation of the DVSA and of UK product compliance laws.

Our aim is to i) alleviate the regulations in the UK - following that, and ii) establish a collaboration of UK-based companies to build proper cars of the people.

We hope to realise the potential of the UK and prevent the false economy of Chinese products. Whether the EU and USA follow suit is up to them, but we are campaigning as hard as we can. This will take time, but common sense will out. The 3 main points are summarised below.

Emissions

Always

Allow for simplicity, lightness, parts availability, and longevity in automobile design
Make sure engines are adequately sized

Never

Restrict emissions to levels that shorten engine lifetimes
Built-in obsolescence (obviously)
Scrappage schemes of any kind

Safety

Always

All cars must have a manual handbrake that is physically connected to the brakes
The steering wheel must be physically connected to the wheels
Spare wheel and extra lightbulbs included as standard
Offer entry-level models without ABS, ADAS, AEB, ESC, EBS, traction control, airbags, monitors or sensors of any kind - they are unnecessary at road-legal speeds
Dangerous drivers to have a Black Box installed forever

Never

Systems that can automatically redirect the wheels (ie. “lane-assist”)
Systems that can automatically apply acceleration or braking force
Automatic engine start-stop systems
Very wide A-pillars
Automatic headlight dipping
Windows that seize underwater
Pointless safety testing

Affordability

Yes please :)

Low-stress, electronics-free engines, and preferably continuations of tried-and-tested units
Physical keys and interior switch-gear
Standardised light bulbs
Prioritise lightness and durability

No thanks :/

Cameras and driver-monitoring aids
Screens (especially touch-screens)
Key-less entry and immobilisers
LED headlamps
All warning noises
Customisable suspension, engine, braking, or gearbox settings
And finally... electric bootlids!

I was born in 1996, and was brought up in the rural south-west of England. I started this campaign because the public are being denied the enjoyment of car ownership. My first proper car was a 2004 MG TF, perhaps the last gasp of British Leyland. For the past 6 years though I have used a 1990 Toyota MR2, which has been my daily commuter and is still my only way of getting around. Perhaps this evinces my reserved ambition to drive only mid-engined convertibles. However, it is more profoundly down to a deep love for freedom of choice in life, the realness and the freedom of cheap wheels and personality in motoring.
